Does Wise Work in Turkey? Send Yes, Receive No (2026)

Official rules Updated · Last checked · reviewed by Nomad Istanbul editorial team

Since May 2023 a Wise account with a Turkish address can only send money abroad. It cannot receive, hold balances or use a card. What still works, and what to use to receive money in Turkey.

Partly. Wise works in Turkey for sending money abroad but not for receiving, as of 13 October 2026. A Wise account with a Turkish address cannot receive money, hold balances or use a card since 31 May 2023, and Wise’s help page lists no end date. Someone abroad can still send money from their own Wise account to your Turkish IBAN.

What still works

  • Wise as a pipe into Turkey. Anyone abroad with a Wise account (affiliate link) can send to your Turkish IBAN. It arrives as lira, usually within a working day, and is one of the cheapest ways for a client or employer abroad to pay you.
  • Sending out. Paying a bill abroad or sending money to family from your Turkish bank account still works.
  • A genuine foreign-registered account. If you really keep an address abroad, the account registered there keeps its card, balances and receiving details.

How to receive money in Turkey instead

If you are the one who needs receiving details, for example as a freelancer or an Amazon seller, the usual route is Payoneer. It is available to Turkey residents and gives you USD and EUR receiving details that clients and platforms pay like a normal bank transfer; you then withdraw to your Turkish bank.

Open a Payoneer account (affiliate link). New accounts opened through this link get a $35 reward from Payoneer after $5,000 of outgoing transactions within the first 100 days.

For large or regular transfers, a SWIFT payment into a foreign-currency account at your Turkish bank is often cheapest. All the routes and their costs per $1,000 are in getting paid in Turkey. PayPal is not an option either: see does PayPal work in Turkey.
