Mounjaro and Ozempic in Turkey · Prescription Rules and Prices (2026)

Mounjaro and Ozempic cost less in Turkey than in the US or UK, and foreigners regularly ask whether they can simply walk into a pharmacy and buy them. The short answer is no: both need a prescription here. The longer answer is that getting one is usually a short private doctor visit, and you then pay the regulated pharmacy price out of pocket.

This guide covers the rules, the current prices, and the two questions we have not been able to confirm yet.

Do you need a prescription?

Yes. Turkey is relaxed about many medicines, and our healthcare guide explains how many drugs that need a prescription at home are sold over the counter here. GLP-1 injections are not in that group.

• Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are both listed as white-prescription medicines. White is the normal prescription type. Red and green prescriptions are for controlled drugs such as opioids. Social media posts saying Ozempic “became red prescription” are wrong.
• Law 6197 on pharmacists, Article 24, lets pharmacies sell prescription-only medicines only against a prescription.
• If you pay yourself, any licensed doctor can write the prescription. You do not need an endocrinologist unless you want SGK to pay, and SGK does not pay for weight loss anyway.

What each drug is licensed for in Turkey. The Turkish product information for Mounjaro (KÜB, section 4.1) lists two uses: type 2 diabetes, and weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, prediabetes or sleep apnoea. Some Turkish articles still call weight-loss use “off-label”; the current product information says otherwise. The Turkish Ozempic leaflet lists type 2 diabetes. Semaglutide for weight loss is sold as Wegovy, which is on the Turkish price list.

Prices in Turkey (2026)

These are the regulated retail prices on the TİTCK list, the Turkish medicines agency. Pharmacies sell at this price.

Mounjaro, box of 4 single-use vials. In Turkey, Mounjaro is supplied in single-use vials, not pens. Each vial is one weekly dose, so one box covers 4 weeks. The leaflet says needles and syringes are not in the box, so ask the pharmacy for them.

Ozempic, 1 pen. All three strengths (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg) cost the same: 10,643.48 TL, on the list since 31 March 2026 and unchanged through 31 August 2026. It was 9,261.06 TL in January. The Turkish leaflets say one 0.5 mg pen and one 1 mg pen each hold 4 weekly doses, so one pen is about a month.

These prices come from İlaç Rehberi and Prof. Özdoğan’s page, which republish the TİTCK list. We have not read them on titck.gov.tr itself.

Wegovy, the weight-loss version of semaglutide, is on the Turkish price list at the same price. We have not yet confirmed how widely pharmacies stock it.

Availability

Pharmacies do not always have every dose in stock, and stock depends on imports and the exchange rate. A 2026 dietitian comparison reports Ozempic is easier to find than Mounjaro, with Mounjaro limited to some pharmacies. Call ahead before you go.

Getting a prescription as a foreigner

• Residents with a residence permit have a foreigner ID number (it starts with 99), which the e-prescription system uses. A private doctor visit costs roughly $50 to $150 at the big hospital groups (see our healthcare guide); for finding a specialist, see English-speaking dermatologists in Istanbul, which also covers doctor fees.
• Tourists without a Turkish ID number: we have not yet confirmed whether a private doctor can issue an e-prescription on a passport number. Ask the clinic before you book.
• Foreign prescriptions: we have not confirmed that a Turkish pharmacy will fill a UK, EU or US prescription for these drugs. Plan on needing a Turkish one.

Fake pens and online sellers

Pens sold without a prescription through Instagram, Telegram or websites are a real risk. The European Medicines Agency has warned about a sharp rise in illegal products sold as semaglutide, liraglutide or tirzepatide online, some with none of the active ingredient or with harmful substances instead. Buy only from a Turkish pharmacy (eczane) against a prescription.

Taking the medicine home

• Carry it in your hand luggage, in the original box, with the prescription in your name. Checked bags can freeze in the hold.
• Check your destination’s rules on bringing in prescription medicine for personal use before you fly. They differ by country.
• Storage. The Turkish Ozempic leaflet says: keep unused pens in the fridge (2 to 8°C), never frozen; a pen in use can be kept below 30°C or in the fridge for 6 weeks. For Mounjaro vials, follow the leaflet in the box.
