Are Balloons Flying in Cappadocia Today? Live Official Flags

Short version: the official answer comes from the Kapadokya Slot Service Center (SHM), which flags each of Cappadocia’s three balloon sectors green, yellow or red. Green means take-off clearance is given, and the pilot makes the final call. Yellow and red mean no passenger flights. The box below reads SHM live. We also log every reading, so this page will build up a record of how often balloons actually fly each month.

If they are not flying

How the decision is made

The system is set out in the civil aviation authority’s balloon slot instruction (SHGM, Rev.01, 2014):

• Two flight periods. Morning, from 30 minutes before sunrise to 11:00 local time, and afternoon, from 14:00 to sunset. The famous sunrise flights are the morning period.
• Sectors. The flight area is split into sectors because the valleys have their own microclimates. SHM publishes a flag for sectors A, B and C, plus separate secondary regions. A green in one sector and red in another is normal; ask your operator which sector you launch from.
• The flags. Green: suitable, the pilot decides. Yellow: not suitable now, but may change before the period ends, so everyone waits. Red: not suitable until the period ends.
• Slots. Operators file their flight plans by 21:00 the evening before, and the slot centre matches them against each company’s allocation. The 2014 instruction caps commercial flights at 100 balloons at once in the morning and 50 in the afternoon; later decisions may have changed those numbers.
• The pilot can still say no. Green is permission, not an order.

Wind is the usual reason for red. Fog, low cloud, rain and poor visibility do it too, which is why winter mornings are cancelled more often.

How often do they actually fly?

You will often read that balloons fly “around 300 days a year”, with no source. SHM shows only the current flag and keeps no public archive, so we started keeping the record ourselves: our logger reads the SHM page every 15 minutes and stores the latest flag for every morning and sector.

Until a month has at least ten logged days we show the count without a percentage.

Plan so a red morning does not ruin the trip

1. Stay two nights and book the balloon for the first morning. If it is cancelled, the operator moves you to the second.
2. Check the flag the evening before. The next morning’s ruling is often already up. A red ruling can still change, but it tells you to have a backup ready.
3. Pick an operator that states its weather-cancellation terms. Of the ten we checked, only Voyager and Anatolian Balloons publish them.
4. Keep the backup cheap and cancellable. Most of the activities above have free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
