Renting a Car at Istanbul Airport (2026 Guide)

Short version: you can rent a car at either Istanbul airport with your normal driving licence, as long as it uses the Latin alphabet. Bring an International Driving Permit too. The rental company will hold money on your credit card. Tolls are paid by a small tag in the car, and the company bills you for them later. Do not rent a car for Istanbul itself. Rent one for the trip out of the city.

First, decide if you need a car at all

Istanbul is a city of 16 million with two bridges, one tunnel and a metro that works. A car here is a parking problem and a toll bill. For getting from the airport to your accommodation, read the airport transfer guide instead.

A car earns its keep on three trips:

• The coasts. Bodrum, Fethiye, Kaş, Antalya. Public transport reaches the towns, not the beaches between them.
• Cappadocia. Fly to Kayseri or Nevşehir and rent there, or drive the 750 km from Istanbul if the road trip is the point.
• One-way drives. Istanbul to Izmir along the Aegean, dropping the car at Izmir airport. One-way fees apply and vary a lot by supplier, so compare them on the offer, not at the desk.

What you need at the desk

One thing to sort before the desk: mobile data. The HGS toll app, Google Maps and the rental company’s WhatsApp all need it, and most eSIM apps are blocked once you are in Turkey. See the Turkey eSIM guide for the one that still works and a reader discount.

HGS: how tolls actually work

Turkey does not take cash at toll gates. Motorways, the three Bosphorus bridges and the Eurasia tunnel read an electronic tag called HGS. Rental cars come with a tag already fitted and linked to the supplier’s account.

What that means for you:

• You drive through without stopping. The gate reads the tag. If you stop and look for a booth, you will be honked at.
• The supplier bills you afterwards. Either they charge your card for the crossings when you return the car, sometimes with an admin fee per crossing or per rental, or they ask you to top up the tag balance at pickup. Ask which before you leave the lot.
• Bridge and tunnel prices are set per crossing and change with the lira. Budget for them if you cross the Bosphorus daily; the Eurasia tunnel is the expensive one.
• Unpaid tolls become fines. If the tag fails or the balance runs out, the toll is recorded against the plate and the supplier passes on the fine plus their fee. Keep the receipt of any top-up.

Deposit, excess and “full coverage”

Every rental comes with basic collision damage waiver and theft protection, with an excess: the amount you pay if the car is damaged. The supplier holds a deposit on your credit card to cover it.

Three ways to handle it:

1. Accept the excess and the hold. Cheapest upfront, and fine if you have a card with the limit and a credit-card rental insurance policy from home that covers Turkey. Check that it does; many exclude Turkey or exclude damage to tyres, glass and underbody.
2. Buy the comparison site’s full coverage at booking. Refunds your excess if something happens. You still leave the deposit at the desk and claim back afterwards.
3. Buy the supplier’s zero-excess product at the desk. Usually the most expensive per day, but it removes or shrinks the hold on your card there and then.

Whichever you choose: photograph every panel, the windscreen, the wheels and the fuel gauge before you drive off, with the timestamp on. Turkish suppliers are not worse than anywhere else, but the return inspection at a busy airport lot is quick and you want evidence.

Local supplier or international brand

Turkey has strong local rental companies alongside Avis, Sixt, Europcar and the rest. Locals are often cheaper and more relaxed on deposit; internationals have more counters, newer fleets and easier one-way drops. Driving in Turkey, the parts that surprise people

• Speed cameras are everywhere and fines follow the plate to the supplier, who bills you months later with a fee. Limits: 50 in cities, 90 on open roads, 120 on motorways unless signed otherwise.
• Blood alcohol limit is effectively zero for the practical purposes of a tourist. Do not drink and drive at all.
• Headlights on is expected on intercity roads. Police stop cars without them.
• Fuel is sold per litre and is expensive by regional standards. Return the car with the same fuel level you took it with unless the offer says otherwise, and keep the receipt from the last station.
• Cross-border trips to Greece, Bulgaria or Georgia need written supplier permission and usually a different insurance certificate. Most suppliers refuse. Ask before booking if that is the plan.
• Winter in Cappadocia and the east means snow. Winter tyres are required in some provinces between December and April; confirm the car has them.

Pickup at IST vs SAW vs a city office

• IST (Istanbul Airport) is on the European side, far north-west of the city. Desks are in the arrivals hall, open around the clock. Best if you are heading west or north, or driving to Cappadocia via the northern motorway.
• SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) is on the Asian side. Best if your trip starts east or south, or you want to avoid crossing the Bosphorus at all.
• A city office is cheaper on some suppliers and avoids the airport surcharge, but you drive out through Istanbul traffic. Only worth it if you are already in the city and leaving mid-morning on a weekday.

Check the airport code on your flight before booking the pickup. IST and SAW are 100 km apart.

Before you book: the checklist

• Licence in Latin script, held 12 months or more. International Driving Permit in the bag.
• Credit card in the driver’s name with headroom for the deposit hold.
• Supplier’s deposit, excess and one-way fee read on the Discover Cars offer page.
• Fuel policy and HGS billing method noted.
• Photos of the car at pickup, timestamped.
• Your Istanbul accommodation has parking, or you are not bringing the car into the city at all.
