Hotels Near Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen, by Flight Time

Short version: stay near the airport only when the timetable forces it. Istanbul Airport (IST) is about 40 km north-west of the centre, Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) about 35 km south-east on the Asian side, and they are 100 km apart. For a 6 a.m. departure, a post-midnight arrival with an early connection, or a short layover, sleep at the airport. For everything else, sleep in the city and use the night transport, which runs. One practical point most guides miss: Booking.com will not show you a single Turkish hotel once you are on a Turkish connection, so the links below go to Hotels.com, which does.

First: which airport

Check the three-letter code on your ticket. IST is Istanbul Airport, the big new one on the European side. SAW is Sabiha Gökçen, on the Asian side. They are on opposite sides of the city and the road between them crosses the Bosphorus. Booking a hotel by the wrong one is the most expensive mistake on this page and people make it every week.

Istanbul Airport (IST)

Inside the terminal. YOTEL Istanbul Airport is the only hotel in the building. It has a landside section by the departures entrance for anyone, and an airside section in the international transit area for connecting passengers who do not want to clear immigration. Both sell rooms by the hour, which is what you want for a 5-hour layover. It is not cheap; you pay for not moving.

The airport hotel cluster. A ring of hotels in Arnavutköy and Tayakadın, 10 to 20 minutes from the terminal by free hotel shuttle. Cheaper than YOTEL, fine for one night, nothing to do outside the lobby. Check the shuttle timetable before booking: some run hourly, some on request, and a 4 a.m. departure needs a shuttle that exists at 3 a.m.

The city. Havaist buses run from IST through the night on the main lines, 355 TRY to Taksim in 2026, about 60 to 90 minutes. The M11 metro reaches Gayrettepe but does not run all night. A taxi at the 2026 tariff is roughly 2,000 TRY for the 40 km, about $41, before tolls. The only hotel in the building, by the departures entrance. Rooms by the hour or the night; book the night before a 6 a.m. flight or a room for a long daytime layover. Airside rooms for transit passengers are booked separately at the hotel desk.

Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)

Inside the terminal. There is a hotel in the terminal building that sells rooms by the hour and the night, aimed at early flights and long connections. Rooms are small and it fills on Friday and Sunday nights.

Pendik and Kurtköy. The hotel cluster for SAW sits 5 to 15 minutes away by shuttle, with more choice and lower prices than the terminal. Same rule as IST: confirm the shuttle runs at the hour you need it.

The city. SAW’s natural city base is the Asian side: Kadıköy is about 35 km, and the M4 metro now reaches the airport, which is the cheapest way in when it is running. Havaist and Havabüs serve Taksim and Kadıköy. A taxi to Kadıköy at the 2026 tariff is roughly 1,750 TRY, about $36. Check the airport’s own transport page for night services; not every route runs through the night.

Two bases cover most people. Sultanahmet puts you next to the sights and is the right call for a one-night layover.
