First, check the airport code on your ticket

IST is Istanbul Airport. SAW is Sabiha Gökçen. They are different airports on opposite sides of the city. Use the code on your flight booking when requesting a transfer, including for your return journey.

Enter the full address of your accommodation. “Istanbul city centre” is not specific enough: a hotel in Sultanahmet, an apartment in Cihangir and a flat in Kadıköy are different journeys.

Sleeping at the airport instead? Early flight or a late arrival: the airport hotels guide covers the terminal hotel, the shuttle clusters and when the city is the better bet.

Renting instead? If you are heading straight out to the coast or Cappadocia, read the Istanbul Airport car rental guide first, then compare prices at IST or SAW on Discover Cars (affiliate link).

When is a private transfer worth paying for?

Compare a transfer quote if you are arriving with children, several suitcases, or a group sharing the cost. It is also worth considering when you want to go straight to an unfamiliar address after a long flight.

If you are travelling alone with a backpack and your accommodation is easy to reach by public transport, compare that route first. Paying for a car is a choice about convenience, not a requirement for visiting Istanbul.

OptionWhen to consider itWhat to check
Prebooked private transferYou want a vehicle arranged for your group and destination.Total quote, luggage capacity, meeting instructions and waiting terms.
Airport shuttleIts route gets you reasonably close to your accommodation.Current timetable, stop and the final walk or onward ride.
Metro / public transportYou can manage your bags and any connections.Operating hours and the complete route to your address.
Airport taxiYou prefer to arrange a ride on arrival.Official pickup arrangements, vehicle size and how the fare is calculated.

For SAW, start with the airport’s transport information. For either airport, check current services for your arrival time; do not assume every route runs through the night.

How much will the transfer cost?

Get a quote for your actual airport, address, date and vehicle. A general “Istanbul transfer” price can describe a different journey or a smaller car than you need.

Compare the total for your group. If four people share a vehicle, divide its total by four when comparing it with individual shuttle fares. Include the cost of reaching your accommodation from the shuttle stop.

Check the currency, payment schedule, any extras and cancellation terms before confirming. We do not publish a fixed fare here because your route and booking details determine the quote.

Two other things to sort before the flight: mobile data, covered below, and medical cover. Turkish private hospitals charge foreigners at the desk, so have a policy that starts on arrival; most nomads here use SafetyWing (affiliate link). It does not count for a residence permit; see the permit insurance guide for that.

Before you confirm the booking

  • Match the airport and direction. Airport-to-hotel and hotel-to-airport are separate journeys. Double-check IST versus SAW.
  • Count people and bags separately. Seats alone do not tell you whether all the suitcases will fit. Ask Kiwitaxi about oversized luggage, a pushchair or accessibility needs before choosing a vehicle.
  • Request child seats if needed. Specify the number of seats and children’s ages. Kiwitaxi says the seat charge is added at payment; check the total.
  • Use the full destination address. Add the hotel name or building details. If the street has restricted vehicle access, ask where the driver can drop you.
  • Read the waiting and cancellation terms. Save your confirmation and contact details before travelling.

Need an English-speaking driver? Ask before booking. Kiwitaxi says it tries to assign one, which is not a guarantee.

What happens when you land?

You will want data before you find the driver. Airport Wi-Fi needs a Turkish number or a passport scan at a kiosk, and most foreign eSIM apps are blocked in Turkey. Install one that still works before you fly: see the Turkey eSIM guide, which has a reader discount.

Follow the meeting instructions in your confirmation. Keep the booking number and contact details accessible on your phone. If you cannot find your driver, contact the number provided or Kiwitaxi support before arranging another ride.

If your flight is delayed, Kiwitaxi asks you to notify the driver or support. Do not assume that providing a flight number means you never need to contact anyone. Check the waiting allowance for your booking; it is not a promise of unlimited waiting.

Booking the return trip

Check your departure airport again, then work backwards from when your airline says to arrive at the terminal. Allow for the drive and delays. A private transfer still uses the roads; booking one does not remove traffic from the journey.

Confirm the pickup address, time and contact number. Your return flight may depart from a different airport than the one you arrived at.
