Istanbul Layover Guide 2026: Touristanbul, Hours Needed, Hotels

Official rules Updated · Last checked · reviewed by Nomad Istanbul editorial team

How many hours you need to leave Istanbul Airport, how the free Turkish Airlines Touristanbul tour works (6-24 h layovers), and what to do with shorter or overnight connections.

Short version: with a Turkish Airlines connection of 6 to 24 hours at Istanbul Airport (IST), you probably qualify for Touristanbul, a free guided city tour with transport and a meal. Book it with your booking reference on the Turkish Airlines site, then register at the desk in the arrivals hall 30 minutes before the start. Not on Turkish Airlines, or the tour times do not fit? On your own you need about 8 hours to see anything, because leaving and re-entering the airport takes most of the layover. Under 6 hours, stay airside.

Rules and times below are from Turkish Airlines’ own Touristanbul pages, checked 13 October 2026.

How long is your layover?

LayoverWhat to doWhy
Under 6 hoursStay airside. Rest at YOTEL’s airside rooms if you need a bedPassport control out and back plus 1 to 1.5 hours of road each way leaves no time in the city
6 to 8 hoursTouristanbul if you qualify and a tour fits; otherwise stay airsideThe free tour handles the transport and timing. On your own you would get an hour in the city
8 to 12 hoursTouristanbul, or Sultanahmet on your ownAbout 2 to 5 hours in the old city: Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Cistern
12 to 24 hours, overnightA hotel, then the citySleep at the airport or in Sultanahmet depending on your departure time
Over 24 hoursTreat it as a short stayTouristanbul does not apply. See our first 7 days page

The maths for going on your own. Turkish Airlines estimates 45 minutes from the arrival gate to the arrivals hall, including passport control. The city is 60 to 90 minutes away by Havaist bus (470 TRY to Taksim since 20 July 2026) or about 40 minutes by taxi outside rush hour (roughly 2,000 TRY). Aim to be back at the terminal 2 hours before an international flight. On an 8-hour layover that is about 6 hours of overhead and 2 hours in Sultanahmet.

Touristanbul: the free Turkish Airlines tour

Who qualifies. All of these must be true:

  • You are flying from one international destination to another, changing at Istanbul Airport (IST). There are no tours from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).
  • Your layover is 6 to 24 hours.
  • Your ticket number starts with 235 (a Turkish Airlines ticket). A codeshare sold by Turkish Airlines but flown by a partner counts. A codeshare sold by another airline but flown by Turkish Airlines does not.
  • Both flights are on the same booking reference (PNR).
  • A tour fits your times, and it ends at least 1 hour 25 minutes before your next flight.
  • You can enter Turkey (see the visa section below).

Tour times. The current schedule on the Turkish Airlines page, updated from 1 May 2026:

TourTimeWhat it is
Sightseeing Tour08:00 to 11:30Panoramic drive past Taksim, the Valens Aqueduct, the city walls, Eminönü and Dolmabahçe, with a photo stop on the Galata Bridge. You do not get off the vehicle and there is no museum entry
Half Day Tour08:30 to 15:00Breakfast, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and its obelisks, Hagia Sophia from outside
Evening Tour16:00 to 21:30City tour with a meal
Bosphorus Tour18:30 to 23:00Runs 1 April to 31 October only

Some other language versions of the Turkish Airlines FAQ list extra tours, such as a full-day tour and an Asian-side tour. Check what your own booking can see by entering your PNR on the Touristanbul page. Tours are in English.

What it includes. Transport from the airport and back, an English-speaking guide, a meal on most tours (vegetarian and vegan options) and museum entry fees. Turkish Airlines says there is no capacity limit for eligible passengers.

How to book and check in.

  1. Before you fly, enter your PNR or ticket number and surname on the Touristanbul page to see which tours you can join, and book one.
  2. After landing, you can ask about eligibility at the information desk in the transfer area, opposite passport control. It cannot make bookings.
  3. Pass passport control and go to the registration desk in the arrivals hall, opposite meeting point 4, next to the Hotel Desk. Be there at least 30 minutes before the tour starts.
  4. If online booking was not working but you qualify, go to the registration desk 30 minutes before a tour and ask to join.

One tour per layover. If you have a layover in both directions, you can join a tour each way.

Going on your own instead

If you are not on Turkish Airlines, or you want more than a drive-past, go straight to Sultanahmet. Everything worth seeing on a short visit is within a ten-minute walk: the Blue Mosque (free), Hagia Sophia (€25 for foreign visitors, closed to visitors on Fridays 12:00 to 14:00), the Basilica Cistern (1,950 TL) and Topkapı Palace (closed Tuesdays, allow half a day). Prices and queue tips are in the Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern and Topkapı guides. Check the Hagia Sophia open-now page before you leave the airport.

A city pass is almost never worth it on a layover; the maths is in our Museum Pass vs E-pass guide.

Getting there and back. The Havaist bus is cheapest but slow, 60 to 90 minutes. A taxi is roughly 2,000 TRY at the 2026 tariff. On a tight layover, a pre-booked transfer that meets you in arrivals and knows your return time takes the guesswork out of it.

Get online before you leave the terminal. You will want maps and a way to check your flight in the city. Roaming is expensive and most eSIM stores are blocked in Turkey, so buy one before you land or use one whose store still loads here.

Bags, visa, money

Bags. On a through ticket, checked bags go to your final destination. For carry-on, Istanbul Airport’s left-luggage office is on the arrivals floor, next to the domestic passenger exit and opposite exit 13. On 13 October 2026 it charged 210 TRY for a small bag and 270 TRY for a cabin-size bag, per 24 hours. More in our luggage storage guide. On Touristanbul you may leave bags in the tour vehicle, at your own risk.

Visa. Staying airside needs no visa. Leaving the airport, on Touristanbul or on your own, means passing passport control, so the normal entry rules for your passport apply. Check them on the official e-Visa site before you fly, and only there: copycat e-visa sites charge extra for the same form. Our visa page covers longer stays.

Money. Cards work almost everywhere in Sultanahmet. Hagia Sophia’s booth prices in euros; pay by card rather than in lira at the booth’s own rate.

Long or overnight layover: where to sleep

Inside the terminal. YOTEL Istanbul Airport is the only hotel in the building. It has an airside part for connecting passengers who do not want to pass passport control, booked at the hotel desk, and a landside part by the departures entrance that you can book ahead. Both sell rooms by the hour.

In the old city. With 12 hours or more and a night in between, a room in Sultanahmet puts you a short walk from everything above, and you can do the sights in the morning before the queues.

Turkish Airlines also has a separate hotel offer for some long connections, with its own fare and duration rules. Ask at the Hotel Desk in the arrivals hall, next to the Touristanbul desk, or check your booking before you pay for a room. Every airport hotel option, including the shuttle hotels, is compared in our airport hotels guide.

Before you go

  • Check the three-letter code on your ticket. Touristanbul only runs from IST. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is 100 km away on the Asian side.
  • Friday midday is the worst time for Hagia Sophia: it closes to visitors from 12:00 to 14:00.
  • Rush hour on the airport road is roughly 07:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 20:00. Add 30 minutes if your return falls in it.
  • Take your passport and boarding pass for the next flight with you into the city.

Rechecked monthly. If a Turkish Airlines rule here differs from what their own page says on the day, their page wins.
