Is Hagia Sophia Open Now? Live Status, Today's Hours, Friday Closure

Short version: Hagia Sophia’s tourist gallery is open every day until 19:30, with last tickets at 19:00. It opens at 08:00 until 30 September and at 09:00 from 1 October. The only regular closure is Friday 12:00 to 14:00 for congregational prayer. According to the official Ministry of Culture page, it does not close for the other daily prayers.

Open every day, including weekends and public holidays. Eid mornings and state ceremonies can close the building at short notice; if your visit falls on the first morning of Ramazan Bayramı or Kurban Bayramı, go in the afternoon.

”It closes for every prayer”: what the official page actually says

Many guides say the gallery closes for about 30 minutes at each of the five daily prayers, and that the Friday closure runs to 14:30. Our own ticket guide said the same until today. The official Ministry page lists one closure for the visiting area, Friday 12:00 to 14:00, and nothing else.

The reason is the 2024 layout. Since 15 January 2024 foreign visitors enter through their own gate across from the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III and walk a separate route to the upper gallery. The ground-floor hall, where the prayers happen, is for worshippers only. The two do not cross, so a normal prayer does not stop the tourist route. Friday is different because the congregation is large enough to take over the square and the building.

What the prayers do change is the crowd. Around the noon and afternoon prayers the square and the security line fill up with worshippers and groups timing their visit around them. The prayer times in the box above are there so you can avoid those half hours, not because the gallery shuts.

Best time to go

• At opening. 08:00 until 30 September, 09:00 from 1 October. The shortest queue of the day.
• After 17:00. The tour groups have gone. The ticket booth closes at 19:00, so do not leave it later than about 18:15 if you still need a ticket.
• Avoid Friday 11:00 to 15:00. The closure plus the queue that builds before 14:00.
• Avoid Saturday midday. The busiest non-Friday slot.

€25 at the booth for the upper gallery, paid in euros or by card; lira at the booth uses its own rate. Children under 8 are free. Museum Pass Istanbul does not apply.
