Topkapı Palace Tickets 2026: Price, Harem, Hours, Museum Pass

Short version: 2,750 TL for everything, closed Tuesdays, Museum Pass covers the palace but not the Harem. Book online or arrive at 09:00 in summer, because the ticket queue is the one worth avoiding. If it is your first visit, take the guided tour with Harem included; the palace does not explain itself.

What you are paying for

Topkapı was the Ottoman sultans’ home and seat of government for almost four hundred years. It is not one building but a walled compound of four courtyards on the point above the Bosphorus, with the Harem as a separate ticketed section inside it and Hagia Irene, a Byzantine church that was never converted into a mosque, in the first courtyard.

Since 2019 the palace has been run by the National Palaces administration rather than the museums directorate, which is why the pricing and the Museum Pass rules differ from the museums next door.

Turkish citizens and residents with a Turkish ID pay a domestic rate that is a fraction of the foreign price. The booth takes cards and lira. The lira price is set by the palace administration and moves during the year, so treat the numbers above as the position on the date at the top of this page.

Museum Pass Istanbul

The Museum Pass covers entry to the main palace but not the Harem and not Hagia Irene. If you already have the pass for Topkapı, the Archaeology Museums, Galata Tower and the rest, you still pay 1,050 TL at the Harem gate. The pass does not work at Hagia Sophia or the Basilica Cistern either, so on a Sultanahmet day it saves you money only if you are also doing the museums. Do the sums before buying it.

Hours and closed days

• Closed every Tuesday, and on the first day of Ramadan.
• Open days: from 09:00. Closing time varies with the season and the sources disagree by an hour; expect about 17:30 in winter and up to 18:30 in summer, with last entry an hour before closing. Check the sign at the gate or the palace website on the day.
• The Harem closes with the palace and often stops admitting people earlier. Do the Harem first if it matters to you.

Best slots: at opening, or after 15:00 when the tour groups have left. Between 11:00 and 14:00 in summer the ticket queue can be an hour.

Booth ticket vs online ticket

At the booth. 2,750 TL, no extras, and the queue. Fine in winter or at opening time. Have your passport or residence card ready if you are claiming the domestic rate.

Online. Third-party sellers list Topkapı fast-track entry with an audio guide app from about $79, which is above the booth price. You are paying for the separate entry lane and the narration. Worth it on a summer midday; not worth it at 09:00 in February.

If it is your first visit, take the guided tour instead. The best-rated one on GetYourGuide includes the ticket, the Harem and skip-the-ticket-line entry for about $54 a person, rated 4.8 by about 1,960 people at the time of writing. Skip the tour if you have been before, or if you would rather wander the courtyards at your own pace with a book.

What to see, in order

1. First courtyard. Free to walk through. Hagia Irene is on the left; the ticket booths and security are at the far end.
2. Second courtyard. The kitchens with the Chinese porcelain, the Imperial Council chamber, and the Harem entrance.
3. Harem. Around 300 rooms, of which a route of about 20 is open. The tiled rooms of the Valide Sultan and the Privy Chamber of Murad III are the reason to pay.
4. Third courtyard. Audience chamber, the library, the Treasury with the Spoonmaker’s Diamond and the Topkapı Dagger, and the Chamber of the Sacred Relics.
5. Fourth courtyard. Pavilions and the terrace looking over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. There is a café with the same view.

Some sections close for restoration without notice. On the day we checked, parts of the kitchens and the audience hall were listed as closed by one ticket seller.

Dress and behaviour

No dress code beyond the Chamber of the Sacred Relics, where covered shoulders and knees are expected and staff will ask for quiet. No flash in the Treasury or the Harem. Large bags go through the scanner.

What else is next door

Hagia Sophia is a five-minute walk across the square; see the Hagia Sophia tickets guide for the prayer-time closures. The Basilica Cistern is another five minutes beyond it. A good order: Hagia Sophia at opening, Cistern before lunch, Topkapı from early afternoon until it closes. On a Tuesday, swap Topkapı for the Archaeology Museums or a Bosphorus cruise.

Getting there

Tram T1 to Sultanahmet or Gülhane. From Gülhane the palace gate is uphill through Gülhane Park, which is the quieter approach. From the Sultanahmet stop, walk past Hagia Sophia and through the Imperial Gate.
