Basilica Cistern Istanbul: 2026 Ticket Price, Hours, Night Visit

Short version: 1,950 TL by day, 3,000 TL in the evening, open every day including Tuesday, no Museum Pass. It takes under an hour. Go at 09:00 or after 17:00 and you can walk up; go at midday in summer and you want the online fast-track ticket.

What it is

A sixth-century water reservoir under the square opposite Hagia Sophia, built for Justinian’s palace and forgotten for centuries until a French scholar found locals fishing through holes in their basement floors. It is 336 columns in a flooded hall the size of a football pitch, lit for effect, with two Medusa heads reused as column bases at the far end. Since the 2022 restoration you walk on a raised platform with the water below, and the lighting changes colour on a loop.

Turkish citizens and residents with a Turkish ID pay a domestic rate. Cards and lira accepted at the booth. The cistern is a municipal site, so prices are set by the city and have gone up every year recently; the numbers above are from the sources at the top on the date shown.

Museum Pass Istanbul

Not valid. The Museum Pass is a state museums product and the cistern belongs to the municipality. Hagia Sophia is not covered either, so on the Sultanahmet square the pass only helps you at Topkapı Palace and the Archaeology Museums.

Hours and timing

• Every day, including Tuesdays and public holidays, 09:00 to 18:30 for standard tickets; last entry about 30 minutes before.
• Evening session 19:30 to 22:00, higher price, separate ticket.
• The queue is worst from 11:00 to 15:00 between April and October, and on any day with cruise ships in port. At 09:00 you walk straight in.

The evening session is worth knowing about if you are on a tight day. The daytime crowds are gone, the lighting is the same, and it pairs with dinner in Sultanahmet. It costs half as much again, so it is a choice about time, not value.

Booth ticket vs online ticket

At the booth. 1,950 TL, one queue for tickets, then a short security check. Fine in winter, fine at opening, painful at noon in July.

Online. Third-party fast-track tickets start around $49 to $53 and include the audio guide app. That is above the booth price; you are paying to bypass the ticket queue and for the narration. In summer at midday it is the difference between 30 minutes on the pavement and walking in.

• Skip-the-line ticket and audio guide (paid link), from about $49, rated 4.5 by about 2,900 people. Same idea, slightly cheaper on the day we checked.
• Doing the square in one go: the Cistern, Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque combined ticket with audio guides (paid link) starts around $72, rated 4.3 by about 2,300 people. The Blue Mosque part is free anyway; you are paying for its audio guide.

Skip the tour if you have read a bit and just want the atmosphere; the cistern is one room and the audio guide covers it.

Inside

Damp, cool even in August, and dim. The walkway is flat but can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip. Photography without flash or tripod is fine. Allow 30 to 45 minutes, longer if you queue for a photo with the Medusa heads. There is a small café at the exit and toilets at the entrance.

What else is next door

Hagia Sophia is across the road; see the Hagia Sophia tickets guide for prayer-time closures, which are the thing that catches people out. Topkapı Palace is ten minutes’ walk and closed on Tuesdays. Eminönü and the Bosphorus ferry pier are ten minutes downhill. A good order: Hagia Sophia at opening, Cistern straight after, then Topkapı or the boat.

Getting there

Tram T1 to Sultanahmet. The entrance is on Yerebatan Caddesi, on the corner opposite the Hagia Sophia gardens, marked by a small stone building that gives no hint of the size underneath.
