How do you get from Istanbul to Cappadocia?

Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet all fly the route from both Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen. Fares roughly double inside the final week, so book two to four weeks out. Check which Istanbul airport you are flying from; IST and SAW are on opposite sides of the city.

Where to stay. Göreme is the base with the balloons overhead and the most cave hotels; Uçhisar is quieter and higher, Ürgüp has the wine. Compare cave hotels on Hotels.com (affiliate link; works from inside Turkey, where Booking.com does not).

The transfer. Shared shuttles meet every flight at both airports and drop you at your hotel in Göreme, Ürgüp or Uçhisar for about €10. Most hotels will book it for you when you send your flight number. Private transfers start around €70 a car. Do not plan on a taxi from Kayseri; it is a long, expensive ride.

Renting at Kayseri or Nevşehir. If you want to see the valleys, Ihlara and the underground cities on your own schedule, a small car for two or three days is the cheapest way to do it. The day trip from Istanbul

Several operators sell a one-day Cappadocia trip with return flights, a guide, lunch and the standard loop: Göreme Open Air Museum, Paşabağ fairy chimneys, Devrent valley, an underground city, a viewpoint at Uçhisar. Pickup from your hotel around 04:00, back by 22:00 or later.

It is a genuine option for someone with a single free day and no interest in the balloon. It is also 16 hours, most of it in vans and airports, for a region whose best moments are dawn and dusk.

The best-reviewed one is the Cappadocia day trip with flights and lunch (paid link), from about $185, rated 4.6 by about 190 people. Private versions run $400 to $600 per person.

If you can spare one more day, do not book this. Book the flight and two nights instead; the total is similar and you get the balloon.

Two nights, done properly

Day 0. Fly in the afternoon, shuttle to Göreme, check into a cave hotel, walk to Sunset Point above the town for the view. Early night: balloon pickup is around 04:30 to 05:30 depending on season.

Day 1. Balloon at sunrise, back at the hotel by 08:00 for breakfast. Then a guided loop of the valleys. The standard tours are called Red (north: Göreme Open Air Museum, Paşabağ, Devrent, Avanos pottery) and Green (south: Derinkuyu underground city, Ihlara Valley walk, Selime monastery). Green is the better day if you only do one.

The Red and Green combined full-day tour (paid link) is Certified by GetYourGuide, rated 4.7 by about 4,200 people, from around $21 to $27. Lunch and entry fees are usually extra; read the listing.

Day 2. If the balloon was cancelled on day 1, this is your second chance. Otherwise: sunrise from a viewpoint watching everyone else’s balloons, then hike the Rose and Red valleys from Çavuşin back towards Göreme, about three hours with cafés in the rock along the way. Afternoon flight home, or a third night if you have it.

Flights launch at sunrise, weather permitting, from launch sites around Göreme. A standard flight is about an hour in the air in a basket of 16 to 24 people, with pickup, a light breakfast and a glass of something at landing. Prices in 2026:

The cheapest fares tend to be the biggest baskets or the less central launch sites, which is fine; the view is the same. What matters more is the operator’s cancellation policy. Flights are grounded by the civil aviation authority in wind or fog, sometimes for days in a row, so book a listing that refunds in full on cancellation and stay two nights so you have a second morning.

When to go

April to June and September to October: the best weather and the busiest balloon mornings. Book flights and balloon two to four weeks out.
July and August: hot, dusty, still busy. Balloons fly.
November to March: cold, sometimes snow on the chimneys, which is the best photo of all. Fewer flights and more cancellations, cheaper hotels.

Where to stay

Göreme for the balloon views and the restaurants, Ürgüp for a quieter town with better wine, Uçhisar for the castle and the highest viewpoints. Cave hotels are the point; book one with a terrace facing east.
