Istanbul Museum Hours & Müzekart: Checked Monthly at Source
13 Istanbul museums: opening hours, box office closing times and Müzekart validity, read from the Ministry's own pages. Only one publishes a foreign-visitor entry fee.
Short version: we read 13 Istanbul museum pages directly from the Ministry’s own site. Nine accept Müzekart, one does not, three do not say. Exactly one publishes a foreign-visitor entry fee. If you are arriving late, the box office closing time is the number that matters, and it can be an hour before the museum shuts.
13 Istanbul museums, checked 11 September 2026 against the Ministry's own pages. 9 accept Müzekart. Only 1 publishes a foreign-visitor entry fee. Permanent data link: JSON.

Why the prices you find online disagree
Search for the entry fee at almost any Istanbul museum and you will get several different numbers, all confident, none sourced.
The reason is simple. The Ministry publishes opening hours, box office times and Müzekart status for every site it runs. It publishes a foreign-visitor entry fee for almost none of them. On our check, one museum out of thirteen stated a price.
For the others the fee only appears once you are inside the ticket purchase flow, which is not something a travel site can cite. So the figures get copied between guides, age quietly, and drift apart from each other and from reality.
We would rather show you an empty cell and tell you why than invent a number.
The one museum that does publish a price
The Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum charges 25 euro for foreign adult visitors over the age of 8, and its page states plainly that Müzekart is not valid there. Turkish citizens over 8 pay half that, and Turkish citizens under 8 enter free.
That last detail is worth knowing because it is unusual to see it written down. Most sites do not publish the gap between what a visitor pays and what a resident pays.
One caution that catches people: this is the museum housed in the Defter-i Hakani building on Sultanahmet Square. It is not the Hagia Sophia mosque, which is a separate building with its own arrangement for the upper gallery. Guides routinely blur the two.
Because Müzekart does not work here, there is no pass route: you either pay the 25 euro at the door or buy a ticket that includes entry.

Box office closing is the number that matters
Every museum stops selling tickets before it closes, and the gap is not consistent.
Rumeli Fortress closes its box office a full hour early. So does Maiden’s Tower and the Galata Mevlevi Lodge. The Istanbul Archaeological Museums, by contrast, sell right up to closing. Galata Tower stops at 18:14, which is an oddly precise sixteen minutes before the doors shut.
If you are planning a late afternoon visit, read the third column rather than the second.
How this is checked
A script fetches each museum’s own page on muze.gov.tr and reads the hours, box office time, Müzekart line and any published fee straight out of it. We use the Turkish version deliberately: it states Müzekart validity and the citizen discount, both of which the English version leaves out.
The dataset behind this table is published as JSON under CC BY 4.0. Every museum name in the table links to the exact Ministry page its row was read from, so you can check any line yourself.
