Is unlimited data really unlimited in Turkey?

Not at full speed. Simbye's unlimited plans give 2 GB of high-speed data a day, then unlimited data at 1 Mbps, which is enough for maps, WhatsApp and music but slow for video. Most unlimited travel eSIMs have a fair use limit like this; check the terms of any plan before you buy.

Do I need unlimited data for a week in Turkey?

Usually not. Many travellers use under 1.5 GB a day on maps, messaging and social media, so a 20 GB plan ($16.15 with code NOMADISTAN15) covers one to two weeks. Unlimited is worth it if you hotspot a laptop, upload a lot of video, or work remotely from Turkey.

Buy before you fly

In 2025 Turkey’s telecom regulator (BTK) blocked about 37 eSIM stores, including Airalo and Holafly. Their apps and websites don’t load on Turkish networks, so you can’t buy or top up after landing. A plan you installed at home keeps working. Simbye’s store still loads from Turkey, so you can top up there, but the safest plan is the same for any eSIM: install it at home on Wi-Fi and check it shows a network before you leave for the airport.
