giffgaff Roaming in Turkey (2026): £18 for 10 GB, or Cheaper

Official rules Updated · Last checked · reviewed by Nomad Istanbul editorial team

giffgaff plans don't work in Turkey: data costs 20p a MB from credit unless you buy a Türkiye add-on in the app (£18 for 10 GB at launch). A 10 GB eSIM is about £7.65. Checked 2 Oct 2026.

giffgaff roaming in Turkey isn’t included in any plan: data costs 20p a MB from credit, or you buy a Türkiye add-on in the app (£6 for 1 GB, £12 for 5 GB, £18 for 10 GB, valid 30 days), per giffgaff’s help pages checked 2 October 2026. A cheaper option: a 10 GB Simbye eSIM is about £7.65, see the best eSIM for Turkey or all UK networks compared.

Short answer: your giffgaff plan doesn’t work in Turkey. Turkey is in giffgaff’s “rest of world”, so everything you use is paid from credit, and data starts at 20p a MB, about £205 for 1 GB. The fix inside giffgaff is a Türkiye travel data add-on from the app: £6 for 1 GB, £12 for 5 GB or £18 for 10 GB at launch, valid 30 days. A 10 GB travel eSIM costs about £7.65 (pick from the best eSIMs for Turkey).

giffgaff in Turkey: what you pay

giffgaff splits the world in two. In its EU zone (the 27 EU countries plus Norway, Iceland, Gibraltar and a few others) your plan works like at home, with up to 5 GB of data. Turkey is not in it. It is on giffgaff’s rest-of-world list, where your plan does nothing and you pay from credit.

The add-on prices are the ones giffgaff launched with in July 2025. giffgaff only shows the live price inside its app, so check there before you pay. We could not read current call and text rates for Turkey on giffgaff’s site, so treat them as unknown and keep calls for WhatsApp on data.

How the Türkiye add-on works

From giffgaff’s own help pages:

  • App only. You buy it in the giffgaff app under “View travel data”, with a credit or debit card. No plan needed.
  • 30 days from the moment you buy. It can’t be bought early and switched on later, so buy it on arrival day.
  • Turkey only. Outside the EU zone, each add-on works in the country it was bought for. A Greek island day trip from Bodrum needs your EU allowance, not the Turkey add-on.
  • Refunds within 14 days if you haven’t used it, through giffgaff chat.

eSIM prices are Simbye’s checkout prices in dollars, converted at the European Central Bank rate on 16 October 2026 (£0.750 per $1); your card’s rate may differ slightly. For the same week the eSIM gives you twice the data for about £4 less, and for two weeks twice the data for about £6 less.

Heavy user? Simbye’s unlimited 7-day plan is $17.00 with code NOMADISTAN15 (about £12.75, affiliate link). See our unlimited data eSIM comparison and the full best eSIM for Turkey guide.

How to set up your giffgaff phone for Turkey

  1. Turn on the credit spend cap in your giffgaff account before you fly, so a stray data session can’t drain your credit.
  2. Using an eSIM? Install it at home on Wi-Fi, set it as your mobile data line, and turn data roaming off on the giffgaff line. Keep the giffgaff SIM on for texts, such as bank codes.
  3. Using the giffgaff add-on instead? Buy it in the app on the day you land, then make sure data roaming is on.
  4. Calls home: use WhatsApp or FaceTime on data. To call a UK number, replace the first 0 with +44.

Buy the eSIM before you fly

Turkey’s telecom regulator (BTK) has blocked about 37 eSIM stores, including Airalo and Holafly. Their apps and websites don’t load on Turkish networks, so you can’t buy or top up after landing. Simbye’s store still loads from Turkey, but the safest plan is to buy and install any eSIM at home and check it shows a network before you leave. More in our Turkey eSIM block guide.
