Whirling Dervish Ceremony in Istanbul 2026: Real Lodges vs Shows

Short version: the sema, the whirling ceremony, is a religious ritual. You can see it as it is meant to be seen in a working lodge, Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi, on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 17:00: quiet, no stage lights, an introduction by the lodge’s sheikh in Turkish and English. It is the best-rated option on GetYourGuide (4.8) and one of the cheapest. The Galata Mevlevi Lodge museum holds one on Sundays. Hodjapasha, near Sirkeci, runs a nightly version for visitors.

Lodge or show?

A lodge (Kasımpaşa, Galata) is a place of worship. The ceremony opens with prayers and a ney flute solo, the dervishes enter slowly, and the four whirling sections, the salams, follow without a break. Nobody claps. Reviewers describe it as quiet and moving, and some find it slow.

A show venue (Hodjapasha, the medreses) performs the same ceremony most evenings with stage lighting and a set start time that fits a sightseeing day. It is easier to book and closer to the old city hotels.

If you only see it once, go to the lodge.

Hodjapasha: the nightly show in a restored bathhouse

Hodjapasha Culture Center is the venue most visitors find first. It is a restored 15th-century double hamam in Sirkeci, 100 metres from the Sirkeci tram stop (T1), turned into a performance hall. The same building also runs a separate dance show, Rhythm of the Dance, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 20:30. The dervish ceremony is the one on the daily 19:00 slot, so check the title before you buy.

• What it is: the Mevlevi Sema, with a short music concert first and a seven-part ceremony after it, about 60 minutes. Hodjapasha’s own site calls it a spiritual ceremony. It is held in a cultural center, not a place of worship, which is the main difference from the Kasımpaşa lodge.
• When: every day at 19:00. Check-in is 30 minutes before. Seats are first booked, first served, so book ahead for better seats.
• Age: 7 and over only, on the official site and on GetYourGuide.
• Photos: not allowed during the ceremony. Talking and applause are not allowed either.
• Included: the ticket, a program booklet and bottled water. Not suitable for wheelchair users.
• Price: GetYourGuide showed $32 per person on 24 October 2026 (crossed-out $40), rated 4.4 from 5,446 reviews, free cancellation up to 24 hours before (affiliate link). Hodjapasha’s own booking page listed the 19:00 show at $42 for adults and $24 for children 7-12 on 24 October 2026, so compare both before you pay.

Who it suits: you are staying in Sultanahmet, you want an evening slot that is easy to book, and a lodge on a Wednesday, Friday or Sunday at 17:00 does not fit your days. Our pick stays the Kasımpaşa lodge: 4.8 against 4.4, and a quiet room instead of a staged one.
