Which hamam should I book in Istanbul?

Our pick is Gedikpaşa, a working bath from 1475 next to the Grand Bazaar. On GetYourGuide it is rated 4.8 (1,436 reviews on 25 October 2026). The Hammam Ritual (15 minutes on the hot marble, scrub and foam wash, same-sex attendant) costs €70 there, the same as on the bath's own site, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. On a tight budget, Mihrimah Sultan in Edirnekapı does the same ritual for about €18, no booking.

How much does a hamam cost in Istanbul?

On their own websites, checked 24 September 2026, the cheapest package with scrub and foam wash costs €70 at Gedikpaşa, €72 at Çemberlitaş, ₺4,700 (about €84, rechecked 8 October 2026) at Kılıç Ali Paşa, €90 at Süleymaniye, €95 at Cağaloğlu, €110 at Hürrem Sultan and €125 at Zeyrek Çinili. Mihrimah Sultan, a 16th-century Sinan bath in Edirnekapı used by locals, charges ₺1,000, about €18. Ağa Hamamı in Cihangir charges ₺3,100 cash or ₺3,600 by card.

What happens in a Turkish hamam?

You change into a cotton wrap called a peştemal, sit in the hot marble room for 15 to 20 minutes to sweat, then an attendant scrubs you with a coarse mitt, washes you in a mountain of foam, rinses you with bowls of water and leaves you to cool down with tea. The whole thing takes 60 to 90 minutes. A massage is a separate add-on.

Are Istanbul hamams mixed?

The historic baths have separate men's and women's sections, either as two wings running at the same time or as separate time slots. Attendants are the same sex as the guest. A few modern spa-style hamams offer private mixed rooms for couples, which is what the online listings mean by private.

What do you wear in a hamam?

The peştemal wrap they give you, and underwear or bikini bottoms if you prefer; many people go without and nobody minds. Leave jewellery in the locker. Everything else, towel, slippers, soap and scrub mitt, is provided in the tourist baths. In neighbourhood baths bring your own soap and mitt or buy them at the door.

How much do you tip at a hamam?

10 to 15% of the package price to the attendant who scrubbed you, in cash, at the end. Some baths add a service charge or pool tips; ask at the desk. Do not tip before the service.

On a budget? Mihrimah Sultan, a 16th-century Sinan bath in Edirnekapı that locals use, does the same scrub and foam wash for ₺1,000, about €18 (its own site, 24 September 2026). No booking, plainer, less English. Worth it if you are staying a while or want the local version.

What happens inside

Gedikpaşa is a 4-minute walk from the Beyazıt–Grand Bazaar tram stop. You pick a fixed time and pay later; €70 matches the bath’s own price list.

Change. You get a locker, a peştemal (a thin cotton wrap) and slippers. Wrap up, leave everything else in the locker.
Sweat. Lie on the heated marble slab under the dome for 15 to 20 minutes. Nobody hurries you.
Scrub. An attendant of your sex scrubs your whole body with a coarse mitt called a kese. It is not gentle; grey rolls of dead skin come off, which is the point. Say “yavaş” if you want it softer.
Foam wash. A cloud of soap foam over you, a wash and a few minutes of light massage, then bowls of warm and cool water.
Cool down. Dry towels, tea, 20 minutes sitting. Standing up too fast after the heat is the classic mistake.

Allow 60 to 90 minutes in total. An oil massage is a separate room and a separate price.

What to bring: nothing at the tourist baths; towel, slippers and soap are provided. Wear underwear or bikini bottoms under the wrap if you like; both are normal. Leave jewellery and your phone in the locker; no photos inside. Do not go on a full stomach, drunk or with fresh sunburn.

Tipping: 10 to 15% of the package price, in cash, to the attendant who scrubbed you, at the end. Some baths add a service charge or pool tips; ask at the desk.

The other historic baths

Kılıç Ali Paşa (1583, Sinan), Karaköy, near Galata. The finest building. Walk-ins may queue.
Çemberlitaş (1584, Sinan), old city. Open 06:00 to midnight, the longest hours of the big baths. Sells plain entry (₺3,200, €57) without a scrub.
Cağaloğlu (1741), near Hagia Sophia. Famous name, grand interior. Separate men’s and women’s sections, no couples service.
Hürrem Sultan (1556, Sinan), Sultanahmet. The most spa-like. Two mirrored wings.

Couples: Süleymaniye (€90, cash only) and Acemoglu (swimwear, mixed baths) are the two where men and women go in together. Everywhere else has separate sections or time slots.

Ten historic Istanbul hamams were checked on their own websites for the cheapest package that includes the full ritual (hot room, kese scrub and foam wash), what it includes, the price range of all published packages, and how men and women are admitted. Only the hamam's own site counts as a published price; reseller and review-site figures do not. Prices are recorded in the currency the hamam publishes. Lira prices are converted to euros at about ₺56 per €1, the rate implied by the hamams that publish both (Çemberlitaş and Zeyrek Çinili), and marked as approximate. Each hamam name links to the page the figures were read from. GetYourGuide links are affiliate links (we may earn a commission, you pay the same); their prices were read from the live listings on the check date.

The building is not what you pay for. Mihrimah Sultan and Kılıç Ali Paşa are both Sinan baths from the same decades. One charges about €18, the other about €84. The difference is location and who the bath is run for.
Kılıç Ali Paşa is cheaper than its reputation. Guides still list it at $100 to $150. Its own site says ₺4,700 including VAT (8 October 2026; it was ₺4,300 on 24 September), with 5% off for cash.
Cash matters at the lira-priced baths. Ağa Hamamı charges ₺500 more by card; Kılıç Ali Paşa gives 5% off for cash; Süleymaniye takes cash only.
Cağaloğlu’s own site does not say what its €95 package contains. Its GetYourGuide listing did on 24 September: hot room, kese scrub, foam wash, tea and sherbet.
Tarihi Galatasaray lists its services with no prices. Call them.

Neighbourhood hamams

Every district has a working bath that locals use weekly, at prices a tourist bath would not recognise. They are plainer, the attendants speak less English, you bring or buy your own soap and mitt, and the scrub is often better because nobody is on a timetable. Ask at your local barber or the building’s kapıcı which one people use. Two that foreigners find easy: Aziziye in Kadıköy, and Tarihi Galatasaray Hamamı off İstiklal, which is mid-priced rather than local but rarely full.

When to go

Any time of year; it is the one thing in the city that is better in winter. The first or second day after a long flight resets you faster than sleep does. Mornings are quietest. Women’s slots at the single-section baths are usually daytime, so check before turning up in the evening.

Gedikpaşa (4.8, 1,436 reviews) and Acemoglu (4.6, 1,543) pass. The Old City private bath (4.6, 4,133) is a hotel spa, listed as a private option, not a historic bath. Cağaloğlu and Hürrem Sultan are rated 4.8 but cost more on GetYourGuide than at the door, so we do not link them.
